Readers of this blog (if any) will have noticed this restaurant noted on (one of) my (increasing number of) favorites list. Just can't help it! It's a small restaurant but the flavors are intensely big. Of all the stuff on the menu that I love, the Chinese crepes are what I love most. To the uninitiated, Chinese crepes are typically bigger and thicker than their Western counterparts. This is what the savory green onion crepes served here typically look like:
Looks more like a stuffed pita than a pancake, don't it? |
As for main dishes, Maison du Nord offers various noodle meals (either noodle soup or lo mein - i.e., noodles with sauces and toppings), and their noodles are handmade, dumplings, and meat dishes (I...think... that there is a vegetarian section. Thing is, carnivore that I am, I basically never notice that section of the menu. It's like I have a perception filter for all things vegetable or something) (because honestly, I really do eat fruits and vegetables only to keep the scurvy away).
To show you all what the meals look like, I illustrate with our order from a recent visit. In addition to crepes, we ordered three different bowls of noodles.
1.Braised beef noodle soup (and... Chinese green vegetables, I guess? Like I said, I never do notice vegetables, to be honest :P ):
Yeah, I guess (begrudgingly) that there are vegetables... |
2.Tomato and egg on noodles:
Very shiny, very happy (looking) lunch! |
3. Spicy beef and cucumber on noodles:
So, does cucumber count as my veggie intake? |
On top of that, we ordered fried beef and onion dumplings:
Want some...right now...oh why am I at home and not there... |
And also, beef tendons (yes, beef tendons - the stuff is awesome, damn it! Open your minds, people!):
Okay, I got nothin'. Just try it! |
Anyhow, there's not too much more to say. Just one... well, warning, for lack of a better term. Be careful when you order the spicy food. The default spicy version of the dishes are pretty spicy, and God help you if you ask for extra spicy. This is Northern Chinese food, where their stripped down spicy dishes are already wicked hot; you amp it up at your own risk! And one last tiny tidbit - they only take cash or debit.
So, to conclude: I love this place, and so should you! Take a small jaunt over when you have a moment! It's right outside Guy-Concordia Metro Station, up the street from a bike path, and a whole bunch of buses stop near it - no excuse not to go, really!
