My favorite takeout combo: All-dressed pizza and steak-pepperoni stub!
Mouthwatering summary:  Inexpensive St-Henri pizzeria and diner that delivers great pizza and subs!
Food to try:  MEAT LOVERS' PIZZA!

Ah, the joys of delivery. For those moments when you're just too smegging lazy or busy to get out of the house, having restaurants that are ready, willing, and eager to cook you food and come right to your doorstep to drop it off is a wonderful little luxury. When I get into those busy periods, one of my favorite standbys for delivery is this tiny little pizzeria/diner in my neck of the woods:  La Frita Pizzeria. And truth be told, I have literally never eaten at this restaurant in person. The most I've ever done is walk on down to pick up an order and bring the food home. And every time, it's worth the trip!

Despite having eaten their food many, many times, I am only going to do a stub review of La Frita today since I'll only be detailing my favorite take-out combo in this post. This review will expand with each successive time I order from here. Just trust me when I say that their best dishes are always their pizzas and subs. Oh, yes. Their PIZZA.  Mmmmmm....

Ahem. Let's begin, shall we?

My favorite combo from La Frita is a small all-dressed pizza (at 10") paired with a 10" steak and pepperoni sub ($13.99 before tax) (and shown above). I don't know if you can get this special in-restaurant, but then again, that matters little to me right? Here's what the whole order again:

And now, for some commentary. First, the submarine. On its own, the 10" steak and pepperoni sub would cost $8.99. This sub is GREAT.

10" steak and pepperoni sub

Tomato removed; LOOK at that meat!
First of all, you see that white dressing that just about drenches the sub? It's a rich, almost creamy dressing that's tangy. It gets just about everywhere in the sub. But that's more than fine. The pepperoni is cut into thin, square strips, and goes very well with the tender seasoned fried steak slices. The onions, while not fully cooked through, are cooked to point where they're just starting to get soft. The bun, while pretty standard, is still nonetheless well-toasted and complementary to all the other ingredients. Oh, right, there's also a lot of perfunctory shredded lettuce with a couple of slices of tomato. "Salad", as the staff at this place call it. Bah! Anyway, on the whole, this is a salty, meaty, satisfying sandwich that is IMPOSSIBLE  to eat with any dignity. Parts of this sub will fall apart in your hands with every bite, and it always drips. And it is GOOD. But yeah, get ready to wash your hands and face (and quite possibly your floor) when you're done!

And now we get to the main reason I eat at this place:  Pizza. Y'see, even if I don't get the combo, I will certainly get pizza of some sort. Quite often it will be the Meat Deluxe (pepperoni, smoked meat, bacon, Italian sausage, ground beef, cheese and sauce; $11.99 for a small). In a combo though, I get the all-dressed. You know, the bog-standard pepperoni, mushrooms, peppers, cheese and sauce. It's a VERY good kind of bog-standard, though! Here's the 10" all-dressed pizza ($8.99 on its own) pizza in a bit more detail.

All-dressed, mouthwatering, and DELICIOUS
This thing has a crispy outer crust, while its inner crust is soft and porous and chewy. Moreover, the crust tastes as though the folks at La Frita put in a bit more sugar in the dough than at most other places. Now don't get me wrong - it's NOT sugary at all. It's just that you can taste more hints of sweetness than in pizza crusts elsewhere. It also bears noting that it's the rare pizza crust that can still be tasted along with the toppings; La Frita pizza crusts are that rare commodity. In a similar vein, whereas I found the sauce at Tomato (see my review here: http://mouthwateringmontreal.blogspot.ca/2013/10/tomato-la-boite-pizza-thin-crust-pizzas.html) to have more of a tart accent, the tomato sauce at La Frita has decidedly more sweet accents to it. Also, I think (I'm not 100% sure) that there are slight traces of garlic in the sauce as well. It's nice! Beyond these thoughts on the crust and sauce, there's not too much else to say about this pizza, except for the fact that no one ingredient overpowers the others. They are all there in just the right quantities such that they all complement one another. That's basically another rare feat for pizzas. And it certainly is the reason for which La Frita is one of my favorite pizza places, period!

To cap off this review, I give you the front page of their flyer - this is where all their combo specials are listed, and I'm not so sure that the specials are given any prominence on their online order menu:

If you live near the Lionel-Groulx, Place St-Henri, or Charlevoix Metro Stations, go ahead and give 'em a call. Enjoy, folks!
